Ending modern slavery through education, advocacy and empowering survivors of human trafficking.

The Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST) is a Los Angeles–based nonprofit organization that is working to put an end to modern slavery and human trafficking through comprehensive, life-transforming services to survivors and a platform to advocate for groundbreaking policies and legislation. Over the past two decades, CAST has supported thousands of survivors through every phase of their journey to freedom from counseling, to legal resources, to housing, educational and leadership training and mentorship. Through these programs, CAST has helped empower survivors to overcome their traumatic pasts and become leading voices in shaping policy and public awareness to ultimately put an end to the fastest growing criminal enterprise of the 21st century.

3Strands Global Foundation was founded in response to an event that shook a small, tight-knit California community. A young girl was trafficked for 8 days before she was recovered by law enforcement. This would later spark the creation of PROTECT prevention education, which has gone on to educate hundreds of thousands of students on how to stay safe from human trafficking.

The 3SGF team then recognized that there needed to be more resources available to survivors and those who face barriers to sustainable economic opportunities. With this in mind, 3SGF launched the Employ + Empower program, which has helped support and economically empower hundreds of individuals.

Herstory is a volunteer-run platform designed primarily for adult female survivors of sexual assault. Majority of survivors are not able to define their experience. Our objective is to bridge the gap, and first and foremost provide survivors of sexual assault with the information you need to make sense of what happened. We also share resources to help you navigate your options and take action—when you are ready and should you choose to do so. We reviewed hundreds of resources around sexual assault from scientific articles to social listening to form a well rounded, evidence- and real-world based picture of the issue. The Dinner Party is a platform for grieving 20-, 30-, and early 40-somethings to find peer community and build lasting relationships. Since 2014, The Dinner Party has connected more than 13,000 grieving peers to one another, including 2,000 since the start of the pandemic. We screen, train and support a growing network of peer hosts, and connect them to 12-15 people nearby, who share a similar age and loss experience.  We’ve been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition, On Being with Krista Tippet, CNN, NYT, O Magazine, BuzzFeed, and dozens of other publications, and as a case study in various books, including The Upside of Stress, The New Better Off, and The Power of Meaning.  

Our crisis hotline was founded in 1966 by suicide prevention pioneer, Charlotte Ross. It was the third crisis line founded in the state of California, with the goal of provide emergency assistance to people who were not in a medical crisis. Charlotte believed that the help given on a crisis line should be: Provided by crisis workers trained in suicide prevention and intervention, Available 24 hours a day, Confidential, Temporary in nature, Free of charge.

Our crisis hotline functions with those same tenets as when it was first founded. While our services have expanded, many of those tenets and our overall philosophy still apply. We believe that “crisis” is a normal part of life that an individual can experience. Sometimes, that crisis is too overwhelming for that person to handle alone. The purpose of our services is to help support that individual in the short-term, and empower them to find long-term support and solutions.
