Description:

Since its inception in 2011, the Colorado Advocacy in Action Conference has demonstrated a robust curriculum and provided high level speakers on a variety of topics related to advocacy. In just 6 years, its attendance has grown quickly and steadily, and now includes participants from as far away as Rhode Island and Hawaii. Now in its 6th year, CAIA has grown to almost 300 attendees from across the country, who gather to share their experiences, successes, challenges, and benefit from teachings of local and national experts.

This year's conference includes a keynote and workshop presented by Loretta J. Ross, one of the creators of the theory of "Reproductive Justice," and a nationally renowned speaker and writer on women's issues, hate groups, racism and intolerance, human rights and violence against women. She was the National Coordinator of the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective from 2005-2012, National Co-Director of the 2004 March for Women's Lives in Washington, DC, Founder of the National Center for Human Rights Education in the 1990s, Director of the Women of Color Programs for the National Organization for Women in the 1980s, and one of the first African Women to direct a rape crisis center in the 1970s. She has written extensively on the history of African American women and reproductive justice activism, including as co-author of the award-winning Undivided Rights: Women of Color Organize for Reproductive Justice in 2004. She has been interviewed on CNN, BET, ABC, the New York Times, On the Issues, and The Washington Post.

Additionally, the conference includes 24 SESSIONS with leading professionals covering a variety of topics, 6 SKILL-BUILDING SESSIONS, NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES, and SELF-CARE TIME.

Description:

The Colorado Advocacy in Action Conference is co-hosted annually by the Colorado Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV) and the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CCASA). The Coalitions collaborate on this event in order to provide training and education that is based on best and promising practices for addressing sexual and domestic violence, and to ensure that services for survivors are as consistent and comprehensive as possible. Colorado Advocacy in Action is the only statewide conference specific to domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and dating violence advocacy and is intended for victim service providers as well as affiliated professionals. We hope it also provides an opportunity for advocates in the sexual and domestic violence field to connect with their counterparts and build a collective voice to further our work to end sexual and domestic violence in Colorado.

Keynote Presentation - Moving into the Light: Surviving in the Anti-Immigrant Age by Mónica Ramírez

Millions of immigrants have lived in our nation’s shadows due to our country’s broken immigration system.  Among them, scores of undocumented women have been forced to suffer in silence out of fear of retaliation against them by their exploitative employers, abusive partners or law enforcement if and/when they dared to speak out.  Ms. Ramírez will provide perspective into the fears, strengths, challenges and successes that she witnessed as she accompanied her clients on their journey out of the shadows.  She will share lessons learned and advocacy tools that helped her navigate the rocky, turbulent and, often, murky waters of the civil immigration, civil litigation and criminal process.

About Mónica Ramírez

Mónica Ramírez is an activist, attorney, author, teacher, and speaker.   Daughter and granddaughter of migrant farmworkers, Ramírez has been a farmworker, anti-sexual violence, women’s and immigrant rights activist for nearly two decades. She is recognized as one of the nation’s leaders in the movement to end workplace sexual violence against farmworker and low-wage immigrant women.
