Sacred Circle: National Resource Center to End Violence Against Native Women
Description:

The Women Are Sacred Conference is a national initiative first
originating from efforts of Mending the Sacred Hoop Technical
Assistance Project (MSHTA) and Sacred Circle, National Resource
Center to End Violence Against Native Women in 1998.
Subsequently, MSHTA facilitated conferences in 1999, 2000 and
2002. Beginning in 2005 Sacred Circle collaborated with Mending
the Sacred Hoop, Tribal Law and Policy Institute and Clan Star,
Inc. to make the Women Are Sacred Conference an event that
happens every two years.

The 2008 Women Are Sacred Conference will again be held in
Phoenix, AZ. This conference continues to provide native women,
advocates, law enforcement, tribal leaders, prosecutors, judges, dispatchers, clerks of court, healthcare providers, social workers and community members a unique opportunity to gain and exchange information, share struggles and solutions and nurture a growing network to end violence against native women who are battered and raped, and their children. Women are sacred. This knowledge combined with the understanding that tribal sovereignty and native women’s sovereignty are directly tied to one another is the philosophical foundation of this conference.

Conference topics are chosen as a result of requests received for
technical assistance, consultation and training, in addition to issues emanating from research, studies and national issues. Workshop topics include new developments in policy, law and research, meeting the needs of women who are battered and their children, the role of men, accountability and education of men who batter, systems responses and challenges to provision of effective, respectful advocacy. Special concerns, such as child custody and visitation, mental health issues and sexual violence are issues addressed at this conference. Over forty workshops are offered at this conference. Utilizing native expertise to implement culturally-based strategies and materials are continuing priorities.
