Description:

Join us for the 2011 SafePlace Denim Day! In observance of Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month each April, SafePlace asks businesses, organizations and individuals to wear Denim in support of sexual assault survivors and to raise awareness about sexual assault misconceptions. Sign up to wear your denim, ask your colleagues and staff and receive our tool kit! Then learn more ways you can take action to end sexual assault! In 2010, more than 3,500 people in Austin and across the state participated. Businesses and organizations provided posters and other materials about sexual assault and SafePlace programs. Why Denim? In 1998, a teenage girl in Italy was raped by her driving instructor. He was tried and convicted and sentenced to jail, and his case went to the Supreme Court of Appeals in Rome. The court overturned the original ruling stating that because the victim wore very tight jeans she had to help remove them, thereby giving consent to have sex. The case made international headlines and the young woman's jeans became a symbol of the many misconceptions still surrounding sexual violence, such as there is a "correct" way for someone to respond during an assault and what someone wears can be an excuse for rape. SafePlace brought the call to action to Austin in 2008 and since then thousands of Austin area employees have joined others across the world in wearing Denim on this day.

Description:

At this year’s conference TESSA seeks to go “Beyond the Margins” and explore ways to serve all Texans, not just the people who traditionally walk through our doors. It challenges us to see who is missing and what we can do to be more inclusive. Beyond the Margins also signifies our desire to look further than our normal playbook and expand our minds to better meet the needs of all Texas communities. In addition to the general workshops, there will be specialized trainings in primary prevention, diversity, leadership/administration, technology, advanced clinical and volunteer management.

Description:

The Crime Victim Conference Alliance (CVCA) is a conglomerate of 17 agencies and individual community advocates in the Brazos Valley that work together all year to plan, organize, finance and facilitate the Every Victim, Every Time Conference. Our conference is hosted in April of each year during National Crime Victims' Rights Week. The mission of the CVCA is to provide quality, low cost training in order to increase the knowledge of professionals responding to victims of violent crime. They strive to offer an inexpensive conference that provides the opportunity for both individuals and agencies to attend without financial burden. The CVCA advocates for victims of crime by educating the professionals working directly with victims such as law enforcement, prosecutors, community advocates, mental health professionals, probation departments, the medical community and many others.

Workshop proposals are currently being accepted until December 31, 2010.
