WASHINGTON – Among college-age females (ages 18 to 24), the rate of rape and sexual assault was 1.2 times higher for nonstudents than students for the period 1995–2013, the Bureau of Justice Statistics announced today. Nonstudents (65,700) accounted for more than double the average annual number of rape and sexual assault victimizations compared to students (31,300). For 2013, no differences in the rates of rape and sexual assault were found between the two groups.

Estimates suggest that globally, 1 in 3 women has experienced either physical or sexual violence from their partner, and that 7% of women will experience sexual assault by a non-partner at some point in their lives.

NOVEMBER 12, 2014, NEW ORLEANS, LA.  The New Orleans Office of Inspector General today released the results of its inquirt into sex crime investigations by five detectives in the Special Victims Section of the New Orleans Police Department. Results of an OIG audit released in May of NOPD's Uniform Crime Reporting for forcible rapes showed NOPD misclassified 46% of forcible rape offenses tested. The OIG Investigations Division reviewed the 90 sex crime related reports randomly selected for the audit and found significant concerns with 23 reports from five detectives.
