High-profile cases in the media are an opportunity to educate the public about the realities of sexual assault. NSVRC provides expert context and research for reporters to cover sexual violence with context and credibility.
Every victim responds to sexual assault differently.
Some victims may tell others they were sexually assaulted right away, but most do not. Many victims will wait weeks, months, or even years before discussing the assault with anyone. Most victims never make any formal report.

In June 2017, comedian Bill Cosby will stand trial for aggravated indecent assault of a woman in his Montgomery County home more than a decade ago. On Tuesday, May 9, 2017, journalists and sexual assault experts came to the Kaiser Family Foundation in Washington, DC to celebrate ground-breaking media coverage on sexual violence. The event was made possible by Raliance in partnership with The Poynter Institute for Media Studies and through sponsorship by the NFL and the Glover Park Group. The goal of the day was to discuss ways to move the needle on how the public understands sexual violence.

Earlier this year, the American Journal of Preventative Medicine released research on the cost of rape. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study, “Lifetime Economic Burden of Rape Among U.S. Adults”, takes into account the criminal justice costs, property loss or damage, lost work productivity, and short-and long-term physical and mental health treatment for victims. The lifetime cost per victim is a staggering $122,461.
