The #MeToo movement has plenty of people talking about the prevalence of sexual violence and what they can do to help prevent it. But there are still many aspects of sexual violence that have been left unaddressed in this national conversation. And one of these areas is the connection between eating disorders and sexual violence. In honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, we’re shining a light on the intersection of these two critical issues. Understanding the connection between sexual trauma and eating disorders is vital for those working with survivors of sexual assault and

New survey of 843 women in the entertainment industry found 94% say they've experienced harassment or assault. Working in partnership with NSVRC, The Creative Coalition, and Women in Film and Television, USA TODAY surveyed 843 women who work in the entertainment industry in a variety of roles (producers, actors, writers, directors, editors and others) and asked them about their experiences with sexual misconduct. Nearly all of the women who responded to the survey (94%) say they have experienced some form of harassment or assault, often by an older individual in a position of power over the

By the NSVRC's Yolanda Edrington, Associate Director, and Damary Rodriguez, Database and Resource Assistant The #MeToo movement has been empowering to survivors of sexual violence. Tarana Burke founded #MeToo to "help survivors of sexual violence, particularly young women of color from low wealth communities, find pathways to healing.” As an advocate, I have seen few black women advocates and survivors, and encountered even fewer black men involved in the anti-sexual violence movement. So when I heard Charlamagne tha God from the radio show The Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM explaining his

I've always loved children’s books and now, as a mother of a toddler, I have become even more enthralled with them. At home we have books in every room, on the floor, on the furniture, and a few on shelves. It warms my heart that my little one loves books as much as I do. Today I wanted to share a few of the stories we have already enjoyed together and a few I will introduce to my kiddo later on. These stories, also held in the Respect Together Libraries, are perfect for parents or caregivers to share with their little ones to help introduce and recognize Black History Month. A is for

by Tatiana Piper, Training Projects Specialist at the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape I am a young, African American woman who has so much pride, dignity and joy in being black. Unfortunately, that pride and joy did not come easily. It was often blocked by insecurities which stemmed from what society thought black should be. As a child my father would declare, “Say it loud and say it proud. I’m black and I’m proud.” Although it would take several times for me to finally find the courage, I would recite it back to him shouting with confidence. Through the continuous teachings of my

This is a guest blog post by Sarah Harrison, Anti-Human Trafficking Specialist at the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault. When you start searching the internet for information regarding human trafficking, it is likely that within a few clicks you will run across the term “modern day slavery.” This term has been used by everyone from local non-profits to law enforcement task forces to President Obama, and it has largely been accepted and solidified as a holistic descriptor of what human trafficking is.  However, it is important for us as a movement to take a moment to reflect

Once December rolls around each year, I dive headlong into listening to holiday music. Classic songs bring back warm holiday memories from years past, and I find myself singing along as I’m decorating, wrapping gifts, or driving to visit family and friends. Every year, though, one song gives me pause – “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” There are countless different versions and covers of the song, but the gist is always the same: a duet where one person wants to leave a party, while the other spends the whole song convincing them to stay. "The Answer is No" This song can be uncomfortable for a
