HOW OFTEN ARE MEN SEXUALLY HARASSED OR ASSAULTED? 43% of men* reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime.1 Many men do not identify or describe these experiences as rape or sexual violence, and some do not identify as a victim or survivor while others do. Some men may describe their experiences as “unwanted” or “abusive.”2 The terms men use to describe these experiences may change over time. In this document, we use the terms the researchers used to describe unwanted sexual experiences. Rates of sexual harassment, abuse, and assault may differ between studies because of definitions used to measure sexual victimization, and population studied. LIFETIME PREVALENCE OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE3 The most common form of verbal sexual harassment for all men was being purposely misgendered or called a homophobic or transphobic slur.1 34% Verbal sexual harassment1 22% Cyber sexual harassment1 17.9% Unwanted sexual contact3 7.1% Made to penetrate (completed or attempted)3 2.6% Rape (completed or attempted)3 24.8% of men experience contact sexual violence, which includes rape (penetration, in this study), being made to penetrate someone else, sexual coercion, and/or unwanted sexual contact.3 1 in 10 men experience sexual coercion, which includes being worn down by someone who repeatedly asked for sex, and sexual pressure due to someone using their influence or authority.3 Of men who survived sexual assault, 48.7% did so for the first time as adults.3 51.3% reported experiencing their first victimization prior to age 18. 25.3% reported their first victimization occurred between 11-17. 26% reported their first victimization at age 10 or younger. PERPETRATION Men who were raped typically knew the perpetrator.4 52.4% By an acquaintance 15.1% By a stranger 30% of men who experienced sexual harassment and assault reported women perpetrators.1 LOCATION Locations of sexual harassment1 19% Public space 14% SChool 13% Workplace 13% Own residence 13% Phone/text Of men who had spent time in state prisons, 8.7% reported that they had been sexually victimized while incarcerated.5 *This percentage is higher than other studies like the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) because it also includes sexual harassment.
