Jean Kilbourne
I am an expert on the image of women in the media and related issues such as violence against women, eating disorders, the sexualization of children, and advertising. I am also an expert on addictions and public health and the marketing of addictive products such as alcohol and tobacco. I was the first person to study most of these issues (starting in the late 1960s) and have made several award-winning films (including "Killing Us Softly: Advertising's Image of Women") and published two books and many articles. I launched a movement to promote media literacy as a way to prevent many public problems. A radical and original idea at the time, this approach is now mainstream and is an integral part of most prevention programs. My doctoral dissertation was on images of females and males in television commercials.
