April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and this year’s campaign theme is “Embrace Your Voice.” This theme builds on the idea that how you talk about sexual violence matters. Individuals can embrace their voices to show their support for survivors, stand up to victim blaming, shut down rape jokes, correct harmful misconceptions, promote everyday consent, and practice healthy communications with children. The Worcester chapter of the National Organization for Women will bring the theme to life by hosting an education and advocacy forum. Speakers will include representatives from Pathways for Change, one of the first rape crisis centers to be established in Massachusetts, and Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts, as well as Representative Natalie Higgins of Leominster. Participants will be given the opportunity to advocate for legislation that would ensure that sex education includes education about consent and sexual harassment and assault, and legislation that would remove archaic laws that limit women’s reproductive freedom. Participants will also be invited to share ways they have advocated against sexual assault and harassment, and share their vision for gender equality.
