Introduction to the App

We’re thrilled to introduce the new SANE Sustainability app, now available for download on the iPhone and iPad. This project is the culmination of years of examining the questions, why do SANE programs struggle and what does the field need to help SANE programs achieve sustainability? It all began with a casual conversation at the SANE-SART Conference in San Francisco nearly a decade ago (on an escalator, because some of the most valuable time spent at conferences isn’t the time spent in sessions, but the time between them), where we were discussing the fact that so many programs seemed to be struggling to survive. That initial inquiry turned into an OVW-funded project enabling us to spend one-on-one time with struggling programs, identifying the underlying challenges and working with staff and community collaborators to create strategies for successful program administration. While that project was successful and we were able to identify themes underlying SANE sustainability, we had far more people who applied for technical assistance than we were able to actually assist. Next, we worked with the International Association of Forensic Nurses to develop an online sustainability course for program managers, again funded by OVW, offered twice in 2013. However, we knew that our reach with the course, while broader, still didn’t allow us to provide technical assistance to as many who sought it. Which brings us to the app.

Why an app? Why not a manual or an online toolkit or something more tangible? Simple: we know that many people who run SANE programs don’t necessarily have office space in which to store manuals. They don’t always have a dedicated desktop computer or laptop in their clinic space to freely research problems, and frequently much of the managing of SANE programs takes place in the corner of the Emergency Department. But most program managers have a smart phone, and many have the more portable iPads. We wanted to create a resource that would allow people to have immediate information at their fingertips, (almost) anywhere they might find themselves, with the tools they have in their lab coat pocket, purse or backpack.

And so it is with great excitement that we introduce the SANE Sustainability app, filled with resources meant to make running and sustaining SANE programs a little simpler. Over the next several weeks I will be walking you through the different sections of the app, which range from staffing and leadership to funding, support and billing to program expansion. For those of you who don’t have iPhones or iPads, we will also be featuring some of the information contained in the app as stand-alone resources available for free download. In the meantime, I encourage you to explore the app for yourself; get to know its different sections and let me know how you’re using it in your professional world. Have questions or feedback? Let us know your thoughts in the comments or tweet about it using #SANEsustainability.
