Monica Ramirez - Now what? Lets talk about a movement.

Monica Ramirez will be coming to campus to speak about “Esperanza: The Immigrant Woman’s Legal Initiative. Esperanza, which means, “hope” in Spanish, focuses on the issues of harassment and sexual assault of farm worker women. Ms Ramirez will share some of the history of the farm worker movement and the connection to today’s initiatives and what we are able to do to today to support this movement.

This course was developed by the National Center for the Prosecution of Violence Against Women (NCPVAW) at the American Prosecutors Research Institute (APRI), the research and technical assistance division of the National District Attorneys Association (NDAA) in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR) with funding from the USDOJ Office on Violence Against Women.

At the National Institute on the Prosecution of Sexual Violence you will
• Learn strategies which apply to your day-to-day work;
• Learn how offenders prey upon victims’ vulnerabilities and how victims react to the trauma of sexual assault;
• Engage in role play exercises, small group discussions, hypothetical cases and faculty demonstrations;
• Leave empowered to charge and successfully prosecute more difficult cases using strategies specific to sexual assault.

Who should attend?
Prosecutors who handle cases involving sexual violence.

Course Tuition
A $100 registration fee will be charged to help defray costs for the training. This fee may be paid with Grants to Encourage Arrest (GTEA) funds. The course is open to all prosecutors; however, priority will be given to Grants to Encourage Arrest Grantees.
Accommodations
The Loews Philadelphia Hotel is offering a group rate of $149 for single/double occupancy from December 7 through December 14, 2008 (subject to availability). To ensure the group rate, participants must reserve their rooms on or before November 21, 2008 using the group name National District Attorneys Association.

Continuing Legal Education Credit
Attendance at this seminar may qualify participants for continuing legal education credits. Please check with your state bar association for CLE requirements in advance. NDAA will provide information regarding CLE credits at the conclusion of the course. NDAA is an accredited MCLE sponsor in the states of Virginia, West Virginia, Oklahoma, and Mississippi.

The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) will host a reception featuring the Southern Poverty Law Center’s “Bandana Project” during April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The event, scheduled for Tuesday, April 29, 2008 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm, is open to the public and will be held at 123 N. Enola Drive, Enola, PA.

Invited speakers include Commissioner Stuart J. Ishimaru of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Remigia Sandoval of Survivors of Adams County.

The “Bandana Project” raises awareness of sexual violence and harassment against farmworker women. The project was launched by Esperanza: The Immigrant Women’s Legal Initiative of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).
