Description:

Date: Thursday, April 27, 2017

Time: 12:00 - 1:30pm (Central)

While sexual violence impacts every demographic group, myths about sexual violence within Latin@/x communities create misconceptions around culture and race. By engaging parents, religious leaders, survivors and community members, we can promote awareness, culturally-specific outreach and community engagement toward demystifying sexual violence within Latin@/x communities.

Objectives:

  • Build upon personal strengths with cultural identity to work with community leaders to build bridges with community.
  • Identify three leaders and others that we don’t normally see as leaders.
  • Identify and train organizations on the changing needs of Latin@/x communities

Presenter: Maria Jirau-Torres, National Sexual Violence Resource Center

Description:

I am a survivor of sexual abuse. I was only eight years old. The insecurities I had was something I never thought I would overcome, so I accepted that I would die with them. But God said, "NO SO." Thanks to All Nations Christian Center, a local church in North Huntsville, AL, under Pastor Adrian Davis and the ANCC Family, I was able to finally breathe for the first time and almost two decades of my life. I was shown the pure love that God has for us through them and it allowed my heart to heal from those broken places, what I thought was a death sentence turned into a testimony. With my new found freedom, it was placed on my heart to create a event to promote awareness for this violent crime because it's happening to often and not enough people are getting the information to heal. So, I have created a three mile march in honor of the survivors, supporters, the fallen, and the unaware. History has shown us, that the more voices connected to a common goal, has the ability to make a change. If I can help just one, Man, Women or Child restore their self-worth, then I feel like I have done what God asked me to do. Please help me, help other people. If you don't want a shirt, you are welcome to just sow a seed into this ministry to help with the promoting of the community function up until 3/10/2017. This is a Free event, open to the community. We will have a sign-in sheet at the event just to keep track of how many supports were present and also to send out personal thanks to everyone. If anyone has any other questions, please contact me. I am to answer any questions you may have.

Description:

Saturday April 23, 2016 from 11am-2pm, they will be hosting the 2nd Annual Break the Silence Seminar at the Hawthorne Memorial Center, in Hawthorne, CA. The Keynote Speaker is Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Gloria Morrow. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and this event is dedicated to educating, encouraging and supporting those who have been directly or indirectly impacted by sexual assault. Countless women and men are suffering in silence, and as a result are bound by the shame, guilt and embarrassment that is associated with sexual assault. Mary DeMuth, author of "The Wall Around Your Heart" said, "An untold story never heals." Break the Silence is designed to provide a safe place for sexual assault survivors to break their silence, so that healing can begin. Additionally, we equip survivors with the tools to rise above the past, not allowing it to define them negatively. Since they survived this traumatic experience, it is critical that they realize there is a specific and unique purpose for their lives. According to Jacques McNeil, "There is Life, Hope, Healing, and Forgiveness on the other side of the Abuse." Jacques McNeil is the Founder of Break the Silence and First Lady of Transforming Lives Community Church. TLCC is dedicated to empowering those who we encounter to be agents of transformation, restoration, deliverance and growth, which will lead to hope and healing. As a sexual assault survivor, she personally understands the power of breaking the silence. She is an advocate for all who have survived sexual assault, and she is committed to providing hope and a place for healing to manifest in the lives of those who have been violated.

Description:

This College Prep Workshop will prepare young women to navigate their college years in a safe and healthy way, offering smart strategies for handling many health, safety, and social issues that young women face, including sexuality, alcohol use, stress, risk of sexual assault, peer pressure, diet, and exercise. Dr. M. Susan Scanlon, board-certified physician and author of "The Gyne's Guide for College Women: How to Have a Healthy, Safe, and Happy Four Years," designed this interactive workshop specifically for high school and college young women and their moms. The event includes: Health & Safety tips, recommended safety apps, Defining your boundaries, Practicing the Power of the Word "NO," a Fight Like a Girl Self Defense lesson, the "Dorm Room Workout," and plan for healthy eating in college. Why? The college years can be bumpy and even dangerous for young women. The first few months, known as the "Red Zone" are especially tough and the time when young women are most at risk of sexual assault and alcohol related problems. Our daughters prep for the ACT and carefully plan out their dorm room decor, they also need to prepare for the social, health and safety issues they will face so their college years can be happy and productive.
