“Speak” (film screening and discussion) Time TBA, Poor Richard’s Restaurant, 324½ N. Tejon St. Based on the award winning novel by Laurie Halse Anderson, "Speak" unfolds a story about Melinda (Kristen Stewart), a smart and spirited high school freshman who retreats into self-imposed silence after she is raped one night at a party. Feeling isolated from her classmates and from her preoccupied mother Joyce Sardnino (Elizabeth Perkins), Melinda retreats further in an attempt to escape the torments of high school. It is only through her work in art class with the help of her compassionate art teacher Mr. Freeman (Steve Zahn) that she begins to reach out to others and eventually finds her own voice and inner strength. A feature debut of director/co-writer Jessica Sharzer, "Speak" resonates with stubborn honesty and sardonic humor as we follow Melinda on her journey from traumatized isolation to a brave and final triumphant disclosure.

One chapter per week will be discussed. This will include a live-broadcast of the discussion with the Author, as she reads excerpts from the book and leads in the conversation. Participants may view the podcast, call in to join the discussion via conference and/or submit questions and statements by chat.
Please email to request the conference call number. The purpose of this weekly broadcast is to give Survivors of sexual crime a chance to continue to heal. It will also provide a source of helpful information for concerned citizens that recognize the need to be prepared to help a victim. There will be no Broadcasts during the following holiday weekends: Easter (April 22nd), Memorial Day (May 27th), Independence Day (July 1st). Workbooks and Journals will be available for order by by mid-spring. Proceeds from book orders will go to benefit the "Hiding Place Workshop" for Survivors of sexual crime, being held in Maryland October 7-9th.
The Capitol Rally takes place on the west steps of the capitol building in Denver each year on the National Day of Action to End Sexual Violence. This event allows CCASA member agencies, partners and community members to come together to recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month, to honor survivors in our state, and to thank legislators who have worked to improve our laws. The agenda will include survivor speakers, awards ceremony, and performance skits by a teen theater group. Food carts will be in the area so you can get lunch and join us for the rally!
