Description:

Join us for the 2011 SafePlace Denim Day! In observance of Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month each April, SafePlace asks businesses, organizations and individuals to wear Denim in support of sexual assault survivors and to raise awareness about sexual assault misconceptions. Sign up to wear your denim, ask your colleagues and staff and receive our tool kit! Then learn more ways you can take action to end sexual assault! In 2010, more than 3,500 people in Austin and across the state participated. Businesses and organizations provided posters and other materials about sexual assault and SafePlace programs. Why Denim? In 1998, a teenage girl in Italy was raped by her driving instructor. He was tried and convicted and sentenced to jail, and his case went to the Supreme Court of Appeals in Rome. The court overturned the original ruling stating that because the victim wore very tight jeans she had to help remove them, thereby giving consent to have sex. The case made international headlines and the young woman's jeans became a symbol of the many misconceptions still surrounding sexual violence, such as there is a "correct" way for someone to respond during an assault and what someone wears can be an excuse for rape. SafePlace brought the call to action to Austin in 2008 and since then thousands of Austin area employees have joined others across the world in wearing Denim on this day.

The 'clothesline project' is an event designed to bring awareness to the community about assault and for community members to receive information about our services. The clothesline project is held nationwide as "a vehicle for women affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. Description:

Women’s Crisis Support ~ Defensa de Mujeres would like to invite you to participate in Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Saturday, April 9th at Lighthouse Point on West Cliff Drive in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes ®: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence is a nationwide event that invites families to participate in a one mile walk, literally in her shoes by wearing women’s high heels, to raise awareness around issues of rape, sexual assault, and gender violence. There is an old saying: "You can't really understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes." Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® asks community members to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes. It's not easy walking in these shoes, but it's fun and it gets the community to talk about something that's really difficult to talk about: gender relations and sexual violence.
