On April 2nd, at the big green hill at Confluence Park, Denver’s Guerrilla Urban Art Force (GUAF) will stage a demonstration to advocate for victims of rape. Inspired when the man who raped one of their friends was found not guilty in spite of DNA evidence and the fact that his own sister testified against him, members of GUAF started a blog andfacebook page with the hope of bringing attention to the sensible, but apparently difficult-to-process concept that rape victims don’t ask for it and are not to blame for being raped.

The project, called “I Didn’t Ask For It: Rape is a Crime, Being Raped is Not” has inspired dozens of people from Maryland and New York to California and Washington, to create more than 150 flags in support of rape survivors and in protest of rape victim blaming for sexual assault awareness month this April 2011. The flags will be displayed on the big green hill at Confluence Park on Saturday, April 2nd from 9 – 11 am.

After this art demonstration the flags will be sewn together to become a robe for a life size metal figure which will be displayed at the 16th International Conference on Violence, Abuse and Trauma in San Diego this September.

Join us for the 2011 SafePlace Denim Day! In observance of Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month each April, SafePlace asks businesses, organizations and individuals to wear Denim in support of sexual assault survivors and to raise awareness about sexual assault misconceptions. Sign up to wear your denim, ask your colleagues and staff and receive our tool kit! Then learn more ways you can take action to end sexual assault! In 2010, more than 3,500 people in Austin and across the state participated. Businesses and organizations provided posters and other materials about sexual assault and SafePlace programs. Why Denim? In 1998, a teenage girl in Italy was raped by her driving instructor. He was tried and convicted and sentenced to jail, and his case went to the Supreme Court of Appeals in Rome. The court overturned the original ruling stating that because the victim wore very tight jeans she had to help remove them, thereby giving consent to have sex. The case made international headlines and the young woman's jeans became a symbol of the many misconceptions still surrounding sexual violence, such as there is a "correct" way for someone to respond during an assault and what someone wears can be an excuse for rape. SafePlace brought the call to action to Austin in 2008 and since then thousands of Austin area employees have joined others across the world in wearing Denim on this day.
