Michigan Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence
Description:

This year the Michigan Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence is proud to offer an Institute that focuses on survivors of domestic and sexual violence who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LBGTIQ). We will explore the barriers that are unique or amplified for LBGTIQ communities and offer skills and strategies appropriate for anyone working with LBGTIQ survivors or who has an interest in these issues. It is our desire to see that all survivors are welcome to “show up” as their whole selves and that they will receive the same commitment to justice and safety that is the backbone of the domestic and sexual violence movement.

Description:

Advocacy is changing in our new Century. We are working with the multiple needs of women who are in crisis not only from domestic and sexual violence but who are troubled with criminal histories, educational defi ciency, joblessness, basic life skills, mental and physical health management and fi nancial literacy. This Institute will focus on recognizing the changing faces of survivors, and their multilayered and often multi-cultural needs that extends further than restoring survivors from the violence; it is rather holistic restoration, a thorough reconnection of all aspects of a survivors life; both positive and negative. Advocates will be challenged to re-evaluate their values and beliefs, re-defi ne advocacy that is not only empowering but doesn’t compartmentalize the survivor, re-energize the spirit in which advocacy is implemented, and fi nally be able to re-position our advocacy to not judge but value every experience of a survivor and have the courage to do the kind of advocacy that doesn’t fi t neatly in a box.
