Lauren’s story: Lauren Book, founder of Lauren's Kids, was a victim of childhood sexual abuse for six years at the hands of her nanny. Lauren Book-Lim, daughter of noted lobbyist Ron Book, kept the secret from her parents for seven years, until she finally told a therapist at age 17. The nanny was arrested, and is currently serving a 25-year prison term, but Lauren and her family were determined to turn that nightmare experience into something positive. Armed with the knowledge that 95 percent of sexual abuse is preventable through education, Lauren has worked to turn her horrific personal experience into a vehicle to prevent childhood sexual abuse and heal survivors by starting Lauren's Kids. Lauren's Kids encourages victims to "shine a light in dark places" and "shed the shame." Walk in My Shoes is an annual walk across Florida every April (Sexual Assault Awareness Month) led by Lauren Book to raise awareness about sexual abuse and to urge those who have been abused that "it's okay to tell." Lauren's inspiring new book, It's OK to Tell: A Story of Hope and Recovery, is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com. Walkers are encouraged to bring clothing items to benefit the client's served at the Victim Service Center's Sexual Assault Treatment Center. Needed items this year for women, men and children ages 12 & up: Sports Bras / Flip Flops / Walking Shorts / Women's Panties / Men's Boxers or Briefs / and Socks - The Victim Service Center will be collecting these items all month as part of their annual UnderAWARE Underwear Drive for the entire month of April.
