Register online!  Registration is free, but  supporters are encouraged to set up fundraising pages at Firstgiving . This year, the primary beneficiaries of Laura's March will be Parallel Justice and Dirt Divas!

Parallel Justice helps victims of any crime occurring in Burlington, VT. Through money raised at Laura’s March, it will be able to supplement the medical and counseling assistance customarily available for survivors of domestic and sexual assault, with auxiliary funding for alternative healing opportunities, such as yoga, meditation, fitness classes, and other holistic programs. The ability to support survivors regardless of how long ago the sexual assault occurred acknowledges the long-lasting and continuing effects this kind of crime can have.

Dirt Divas, a mountain-biking program for middle school girls, will integrate a self-defense component that includes developing physical and emotional skills and learning tactics to deal with bullying, harassment, and sexual assault--all with the critical goal of prevention. The program will also work on building self-esteem and sense of self-worth so that girls learn early how to value themselves, set boundaries, and recognize that assault of any nature is not their fault.

Questions?  Please email!

Tony Moulton of the Women’s Rape Crisis Center  will give the keynote address at Laura's March on September 17. As the Director of Education and Outreach at the Women’s Rape Crisis Center, Tony Moulton oversees all education and outreach programs. One such program is “Intercept Social Change through Sports,” which works to dispel gender stereotypes and myths and to train athletes to intervene in abuse situations.

Musician:  Antara Gatch, a Burlington musician and teacher, will perform again at the March.

Description:

Learn two health-based programs that help prevent child sexual abuse.

Participants will become Certified Trainers in:

  • Nurturing Healthy Sexual Development workshop for parents and caregivers of young children, and
  • Care for Kids, a curriculum for children ages 3-8 that addresses protective factors such as healthy boundaries, self-esteem, empathy, nurturing skills, and more!

Program Descriptions:

Nurturing Healthy Sexual Development™, created by Prevent Child Abuse Vermont, helps adults better understand the sexual development of children, and how to respond to children's sexual behaviors and questions in ways that promote healthy development. This training also recognizes that a crucial component of nurturing healthy sexual development is protecting children from sexual abuse. Participants will gain an understanding of the scope of child sexual abuse and the relationship between healthy sexuality and child sexual abuse prevention. This workshop is a pre-requisite to the Care for Kids training.

Care For Kids: A Healthy Sexuality and Abuse Prevention Program, was developed in Ontario, Canada by the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit and was adopted by Prevent Child Abuse Vermont in the 1990s. The Care for Kids workshop introduces an innovative child sexual abuse prevention curriculum written especially for ages 3-8. Recognizing that adults need to take responsibility for protecting young children, the program provides specific ways to foster the open, non-threatening, developmentally appropriate communication about the broad range of issues connected to healthy sexuality. In addition, it emphasizes the importance of raising nurturing and empathetic boys and girls, and demonstrates activities that lead to these outcomes. Care For Kids is a theme-based curriculum for children that involves parents and caregivers.
