Fighting the Good Fight: For Survivors, Communities and Ourselves

This year’s conference will highlight ways in which we can better advocate for the prevention of sexual violence in our communities, how to be better advocates to those who have survived sexual trauma and how to care for ourselves in the process.

There will be 4 learning tracks:

  • Prevention
  • Advocacy
  • Healing and Self Care
  • Professional Development

Each is designed to provide you with useful information and tools that can take you and the work you do to the next level.

Are you working in culturally diverse communities?  Do you sometimes feel you are getting burned out?  Do you have a passion to branch out on your own?  Have you thought about how to end abuses against women in your community?  Is there a question about how to grow within your organization?

If you answered yes to any of these questions… This is the conference for you!!

This one day conference includes a continental breakfast, all you can eat lunch buffet, snacks and FREE PARKING.

Academic Discussion and Screening of the Highly Acclaimed: The Price of Pleasure A film by Chyng Sun Master Educator at NYU http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs021.snc1/3062_625343764602_68133224_ In honor of National Sexual Assault Awareness Month Recently, the University of Maryland at College Park showed a porn film with much ado about free speech, but did not address the social and economic issues of pornography and the industry, as well as its impact on young people, relationships, and sexual violence. This is Montgomery College's chance to appropriately respond with intellectual criticism and academic inquiry. From the official synopsis: The film paints both a nuanced and complex portrait of how pleasure and pain, commerce and power, and liberty and responsibility are intertwined in the most intimate aspects of human relations. The film features interviews with scholars of mass media (Gail Dines and Robert Jensen), economics (Richard Wolff), and psychology (Dr. Ana Bridges); writers on pornography and popular culture (Ariel Levy and Pamela Paul); producers and performers from the pornography industry (John Stagliano, Joanna Angel and Ernest Greene); and a former stripper/porn performer-turned-author (Sarah Katherine Lewis). Description:

About the Conference
This is a one day advocacy based conference designed to engage and inform communities of color about sexual assault, how it looks in those communities and what strategies we can use to address and prevent it. This year we are bringing a more global perspective to the issue and while still geared towards prevention we will be painting a truer picture of what sexual violence looks like around the world; and how, on a local level, women of color are being disproportionately affected.

Reflection on ‘Eastern’ based cultures/communities will be highlighted during the conference with speakers who represent Arab, Southeast Asian and Asian communities discussing the issue of violence against women generally and sexual violence in specific.

Conference Topics Include
Prevention vs. Risk Reduction * The Intersection of Racism and Sexual Violence * Human Trafficking * Honor Killings * Women’s Rights & Human Rights * Gender Parity * Violence in Muslim Communities * Strategies for Engaging Men in Our Communities and More.
