What is SAAM? > A Day to End Sexual Violence
On this day, the NSVRC encourages all individuals, groups and organizations to organize and/or participate in an awareness-raising or prevention-focused activity in their community. In 2007 the NSVRC is promoting SAAM film screenings of the award-winning documentary NO! This is a powerful portrayal of the impact of sexual assault in the lives of African American women. It creates an opportunity for people to come together through a shared experience and to discuss specific actions they can take to create a safe and healthy community for all.
By having many events occur throughout the country on this day, we will raise awareness, media attention, and national momentum for ending sexual violence. Please see the Featured Event insert in the SAAM packet for information on hosting a SAAM film screening in your community.
This SAAM packet also includes other activity/event ideas that may be used on A Day to End Sexual Violence, in April, or throughout the year. Please review the Community Activities insert in the SAAM packet for additional information. We encourage you to contact your state, territory or tribal coalition for any coordinated activities they may have planned.
Additionally, on April 5, 2007, the NSVRC will formally announce the recipients of the NSVRC National Award for Outstanding Response to and Prevention of Sexual Violence. The award is designed to recognize individuals, groups or projects who have made a significant contribution to ending sexual violence and making our world a safer place. For more information or to submit a nomination, please visit the NSVRC website (www.nsvrc.org/saam).
If you have a photograph from A Day to End Sexual Violence that you are willing to share, please send a copy to the NSVRC. Events from across the nation may be spotlighted in the NSVRC events calendar, future SAAM materials, newsletters, or on our website.
