This 20th annual World Report summarizes human rights conditions in more than 90 countries and territories worldwide. It reflects extensive investigative work undertaken in 2009 by Human Rights Watch staff, usually in close partnership with human rights activists in the country in question.

This report is based primarily on interviews conducted by Human Rights Watch in the United States in 2008 with individuals possessing direct knowledge of the medical care provided to women in immigration detention. In these interviews and visits to nine detention facilities, Human Rights Watch investigated care for a range of women’s health concerns and collected information regarding each type of facility where US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) policies govern health care.

It is also intended as a tool for staff in rape crisis centers and health service settings who encounter refugee and asylum seeking women who have been raped or exposed to sexual violence.

The review summarizes the learning from the Refugee Council Vulnerable Women’s Project and situates that learning within the wider context of what is known about rape and sexual violence.
