Telling It Like It Is: Teen Perspectives on Romantic Relationships

The majority of teens have been involved in a romantic relationship. The following  brief, Telling It Like It Is: Teen Perspectives on Romantic Relationships, summarizes findings from focus groups that explored what teens themselves have to say about these relationships.  
 
Among the findings:
- Teens view respect, trust, and love as essential to healthy relationships.
- Teens have a clear understanding and expectation of what defines a healthy romantic relationship.
- Teens' relationships typically fall short of their own standards of healthy romantic relationships.
- Infidelity, relationship violence, and few role models contribute to teens' low expectations for healthy relationships.

The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System 2005

The YRBSS was developed in 1990 to monitor priority health risk behaviors that contribute markedly to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth and adults in the United States. These behaviors, often established during childhood and early adolescence, include: Tobacco use, Unhealthy dietary behaviors, Inadequate physical activity, Alcohol and other drug use, Sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection, Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence.
