Just Rural Podcast Series

The NSVRC has created the Just Rural podcast series to share insights and ideas regarding programs, practices and research related to sexual assault in rural areas. The interviewees represent a variety of disciplines, agencies and regions of the country.

 

Ms. Barbara Booth is a staff member of the Community Student Learning Center in Lexington, Mississippi, a Rural Grantee agency of the Office on Violence Against Women. The Community Student Learning Center is implementing a mentoring and peer support program to end intimate partner sexual violence among teens. Here Ms. Booth describes some key aspects of the student peer support project. Transcript 

Ms. Elizabeth Nieves is the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Coordinator for Family Violence and Rape Crisis Services of Pittsboro, North Carolina. Family Violence and Rape Crisis Services is a Rural Grantee agency of the Office on Violence Against Women. In this interview, Ms. Nieves discusses her efforts to organize a SART by reaching out to local partners, including law enforcement leadership. Transcript



John Haynes is Chief Investigator of the City of Durant Police Department in Durant, Mississippi. Investigator Haynes is a community partner of the Community Student Learning Center of Lexington, Mississippi, a Rural Grantee of the Office on Violence Against Women. The Community Student Learning Center is implementing a mentoring and peer support program to end intimate partner sexual violence among teens. Here Mr. Haynes discusses his experiences as a community mentor and how it has informed his work as a police officer. Transcript

Mr. Thomas Nolan is Special Projects Staff Attorney with the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault in St. Paul, Minnesota. He develops educational resources on sexual assault for judges and court officials. Mr. Nolan has extensive experience in prosecuting sexual assault cases in rural areas. Here, he discusses his strategies for the prosecution of sexual assault cases, focusing on the theme and the story of the case. Transcript
