The director of advocacy and development’s primary focus is to envision and lead key organizational functions of program and issue advocacy, grant development, and public relations for Committee for Children. His or her key functions will be to develop and lead CFC’s US and global advocacy strategy and activities; grant-development strategy and achievement of contributed revenue goals; and public relations and social media strategies and activities. To achieve these goals, this position is expected to initiate and cultivate key external relationships, including development of strategically important networks, coalitions, and collaborations to achieve the organization’s goals in the areas of advocacy, public relations, and grant development. This position is also expected to work closely with key board committees, the executive director, Marketing Department staff, and members of the Directors Team.Primary Responsibilities1. Program/Issue Advocacy (40%)

  • Envision, instigate, and lead the organization’s advocacy efforts
  • Create a three-year advocacy strategy and annual goals, objectives, work plans, and budgets with accountability for key metrics in concert with executive director, Directors Team, and department staff
  • Initiate and cultivate key external relationships to build networks and coalitions that will drive CFC toward its advocacy goals
  • Oversee management of advocacy activities within budgets and timelines and in collaboration with other departments
  • Build policy support for CFC’s work in identified state, federal, and international settings
  • Oversee contracts for CFC lobbyists at state and federal levels
  • Provide outreach to government officials and oversee grassroots mobilization campaigns
  • Liaise with local, state, national, and international coalitions focused within CFC’s mission areas
  • Work cross-functionally with CFC departments to ensure strategic integration of advocacy plans and initiatives
  • Produce policy briefs on strategically identified topics in concert with Programs, Partnerships, and Research Department
  • Oversee production of quarterly advocacy newsletter for CFC audiences (external)
  • Deliver internal quarterly reports on advocacy activities with key metrics
  • Oversee development of CFC’s advocacy materials, such as webinars, presentations for online or in person delivery at conferences, social media, policy briefings, coalition meetings, etc.
  • Establish and manage the department’s annual budget and supervise advocacy staff
  • Staff Board of Directors Fund Development and Advocacy Committee

2. Grant Development (40%)

  • Initiate and cultivate relationships with potential, current, and past CFC funders in concert with executive director, department staff, and other CFC leaders
  • Develop annual grant revenue budget and supervise activities to achieve these goals
  • Identify funding sources, reach out to funders, and solicit grants to support development of CFC projects in concert with departmental and Programs, Partnerships, and Research Department staff
  • Establish key metrics and oversee production of quarterly reports on grant development activities and results
  • Work with Board of Directors Fund Development and Advocacy Committee to ensure fulfillment of annual giving campaign

3. Public Relations (20%)

  • Envision and lead the organization’s corporate presence and public profile among key audiences
  • Create a three-year strategy and develop annual plans for public relations in concert with executive director, Directors Team, and department staff
  • Cultivate CFC’s positive and visible presence among key local, national, and international audiences
  • Instigate and supervise public relations projects and activities with responsibility for key metrics
  • Develop and oversee execution of a comprehensive social media plan with responsibility for key metrics
  • Establish protocols for reviewing and posting social media messages to build CFC’s public profile
  • Represent Committee for Children and its work via media interviews, social media, and live presentations/events
  • Supervise and manage corporate communications materials, web pages, social media, and public relations campaigns, using both in-house and outsourced resources
  • Oversee management of CFC’s community relations/public relations/social media budget and staff
  • Coordinate community relations/public relations/social media efforts with the marketing department
  • Liaise with Board External Relations Committee as needed
Required Education and Experience 1.Bachelors degree in business with public policy emphasis or similar degree 2.Minimum of seven years of experience managing primary functions of the position 3.Minimum of five years of managerial experience 4.Experience in the education field 5.Published writer and experienced, sought-after public presenter Prefer 1.MBA or MPA with an emphasis in marketing/communications and/or social media 2.Background in social-emotional learning or prevention education Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1.Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills 2.Excellent project management and data-tracking skills 3.Excellent public speaking and strategic networking skills 4.Proven ability to build an organization’s profile with a well-defined social media strategy 5.Ability to develop, execute, and track progress on strategic plans and annual project plans 6.Outstanding ability to collaborate and build strong teams across functions and departments 7.Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and priorities 8.Excellent organizational and managerial skills 9.Strong leadership and decision-making skills 10.Ability to travel overnight with occasional international travel
