The position of Coordinator of Public Affairs is responsible for promoting the goals and objectives of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA) by interpreting and analyzing current policy issues to shape ATSA’s policy agenda and influencing ATSA messaging to the public, establishing media contacts and providing leadership for the development and production of educational materials and opportunities. This position consults with the ED, ATSA’s Board of Directors, and members about communication strategies including talking points and editorials in response to current events. This position also works with ATSA staff planning social networking strategies, website development and other electronic communications. Ongoing dialogue at the national and international level with key stakeholders in the field is important in this position as it provides leadership on framing issues related to research, management and treatment of sexual abusers. The Coordinator of Public Affairs provides support to the ATSA ED and specific ATSA committees in developing and disseminating quality and consistent position statements, articles and analysis for ATSA members and key stakeholders.



Policy and Publications:

  • Respond to public policy requests from ATSA members, ATSA Chapters and non-member practitioners and policymakers;
  • Work with the ED as primary contacts for media questions/contacts;
  • Development of cross-disciplinary collaborative relationships for the advancement of social and policy change;
  • Public policy advocacy, strategic planning and analysis;
  • Research and writing of reports, grant proposals, articles, web-based content, and other knowledge products;
  • Development and roll out of communications strategies including developing media packets and activities;
  • Work with ATSA committees to develop position statements and critical analysis on identified topic areas. Assist with writing and editing as needed;
  • Work with ED to develop and disseminate an organizational annual report;
  • With the ED, oversee the production of ATSA’s conference abstract, brochure;
  • Work with ED to establish and maintain alliances with key stakeholders within and outside the field of sexual abuse. This will include both government and non-governmental organizations;
  • Work with the Public Policy Committee (PPC) to develop proactive policy initiatives and manage the PPC website pages.

Education and Training

  • Work with identified staff to develop/maintain social networking plans;
  • Support the development and production of ATSA educational materials working with ATSA committees;
  • Devise dissemination strategies of ATSA conference materials (such as conference videos, continuing education opportunities);
  • Develop a library of public policy materials focused on relevant state and national materials (proposed and enacted);
  • Oversee the production of the Forum Newsletter.


  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant government discussions/policies and help determine appropriate responses;
  • Attend and/or participate in national conferences, workshops, meetings and focus groups;
  • Participate in staff meetings as requested;
  • Take on special projects as directed;
  • Other duties as assigned.


Skills • A minimum of five years’ experience in related field(s) of public health, public policy, public affairs; • A minimum of a four year degree in a related field; • Experience in the field of sex offender treatment, management, research, victim advocacy or related fields; • Excellent oral and written communications skills and ability to express self clearly to both expert and more public audiences; • Experience communicating through traditional and new media; • Credibility and experience to connect ATSA to a range of resources and opportunities outside of the organization; • An outstanding relationship builder with existing ties to a broad and diverse range of organizations; • Proven successful experience working in a variety of diverse contexts and communities with the ability to interact professionally and thoughtfully with a wide array of people, and a record of success as a positive and high energy leader; • Proven skills and experience in meeting facilitation and training, providing technical assistance to organizations and committees; • Proficiency with Windows-based word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email and the Internet.
