Qualifications: 
  • Certification as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner with at least five years experience as a SANE nurse required. SANE-A certification preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of sexual violence issues.
  • Knowledge of VAWA Forensic Compliance.
  • Three years or more work experience in program administration and supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse groups.
Salary Level: 
Salary range $75K - $90K annually based on experience with additional pay for on-call hours and exams done outside of standard 40 hr/week.

Description: 

The District of Columbia SANE Program is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Director. The SANE Director manages the medical forensic examination program for sexual assault victims that is anchored at Washington Hospital Center; trains and supervises SANE nurses; coordinates with the Sexual Assault Unit at the Metropolitan Police Department, the Parks Police, and the Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Unit at the DC US Attorney’s Office around evidence collection, delivery and testimony; assists with program planning and development; is responsible for general administration of the SANE Program; and generates all applicable program reports. The position is full time and requires some evening and weekend coverage.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and manage a monthly on-call schedule that provides 24/7/365 coverage for SANE services in DC.
  2. Maintain a stable team of at least ten (10) Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners.
  3. Participate in recruiting, interviewing, hiring and training new nurse examiners as needed to maintain adequate coverage.
  4. Perform forensic examinations according to established protocols.
  5. Maintain supplies and equipment as needed to conduct forensic examinations.
  6. Conduct daily case review of all newly created patient records from previous on-call shifts.
  7. Submit files to Medical Director for Quality Assurance review in a timely manner.
  8. Maintain statistical data related to forensic patients and prepare programmatic reporting.
  9. Create tracking system for all non-Washington Hospital Center exams to ensure that evidence is handled correctly and in a timely manner.
  10. Develop inter-jurisdictional exam and payment protocols for neighboring jurisdictions in Maryland and Virginia.
  11. Participate in clinical supervision and staff education peer review.
  12. Ensure that nurse examiner hospital credentialing is current.
  13. Establish annual competency reviews and quality assurance goals.
  14. Develop protocols for nurse management including guidelines for disciplinary and/or termination process.
  15. Provide presentations to the community regarding the SANE program.
  16. Communicate and interact with the DC Sexual Assault Response Team (SART).
  17. Work collaboratively with DC Rape Crisis Center Director and the SART Coordinator. 
  18. Attend monthly SART meetings and provides data as indicated to the SART.
  19. Prepare and participate in courtroom proceedings as expert witness as needed.
  20. Participate in long range planning, goal setting, program development and evaluation of DC SANE program.
