ENOLA, Pa. ‑ Earlier this month, tornadoes ripped through Texas. Since April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) wants to remind everyone that sexual violence increases in disaster-stricken areas. To aid efforts in disaster-stricken areas, NSVRC is launching Cards That Care, a special design competition to support
The Relief Fund for Sexual Assault Victims.

The loss of housing, employment and resources that accompany a natural disaster creates environments where criminal activity, such as sexual violence, increases. In response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, The Relief Fund for Sexual Assault Victims was established to aid sexual assault victims and advocacy programs impacted by disasters across the United States.

This month, to help support these efforts, NSVRC is hosting an online design competition inviting people to create Cards That Care. Winning designs that convey The Relief Fund's message, "Lend a hand, heal a heart," will be transformed into note cards, and 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the cards will support sexual assault victims and services impacted by disasters. The release of the note cards will coincide with the start of the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1.

"Learning from previous disasters, we know that during those times people are more vulnerable to sexual violence,” says NSVRC Director Karen Baker. “With this design project, we're not only bringing awareness to this fact, but we're engaging online communities and urging them to use their creativity to make a difference. Cards That Care is an interactive way to support The Relief Fund during Sexual Assault Awareness Month."

Design entries should be emailed to by April 30. For more information and official rules, visit The competition will be promoted via social media, including Twitter using #ReliefFund.

Founded by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape in 2000, NSVRC identifies, develops and disseminates resources regarding all aspects of sexual violence prevention and intervention.
