New data released today by Planned Parenthood Federation of America on consent and sexual assault shows that there continues to be a great deal of confusion about what consent is and the definitions of sexual assault.

WASHINGTON, April 12, 2016—The World Bank Group and nonprofit Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) today awarded nine teams from around the world a total of US$1.2 million in recognition of their innovations to prevent gender-based violence.

The Sexual Violence in Conflict Committee has today published Sexual Violence in Conflict: A War Crime, in which it calls on the Government to set out ambitious policy goals for reducing conflict-related sexual violence to ensure the international momentum created by the Prevention of Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI) is not lost.

Earlier this month, the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) announced the release of the FY2016 National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) grant solicitation. A landmark program of the Obama-Biden Administration, the $45 million SAKI program will support a community-based response to ending the rape kit backlog in the United States.

What is the “rape kit backlog”?

As member states, UN agencies and civil society groups gather at the Commission on the Status on Women (CSW) to promote gender equality, HelpAge International is drawing attention to the lack of data on older women, which leaves them vulnerable to violence and discrimination.

"Data on physical and sexual violence against women usually stops at age 49, effectively excluding a quarter of the world's women," said Bridget Sleap, Senior Rights Policy Adviser at HelpAge, speaking at CSW this week.
