As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Walk Against Rape will be held on Saturday, April 30th, 2011. Walk Against Rape is a 3.5 mile walk starting at The Women's Building at 10:00AM and culminating in a festival at 1:00PM at Potrero del Sol Park ("La Raza Park). Walkers will arrive in the park to find speakers, performances, vendors, the Clothesline Project on display, prizes for the highest fundraisers, several community organizations who will be offering information and resources, and food and drink. Walkers interested in participating can download a registration form and begin to collect donations from their friends and family. All proceeds will benefit San Francisco Women Against Rape.

Lauren’s story: Lauren Book, founder of Lauren's Kids, was a victim of childhood sexual abuse for six years at the hands of her nanny. Lauren Book-Lim, daughter of noted lobbyist Ron Book, kept the secret from her parents for seven years, until she finally told a therapist at age 17. The nanny was arrested, and is currently serving a 25-year prison term, but Lauren and her family were determined to turn that nightmare experience into something positive. Armed with the knowledge that 95 percent of sexual abuse is preventable through education, Lauren has worked to turn her horrific personal experience into a vehicle to prevent childhood sexual abuse and heal survivors by starting Lauren's Kids. Lauren's Kids encourages victims to "shine a light in dark places" and "shed the shame." Walk in My Shoes is an annual walk across Florida every April (Sexual Assault Awareness Month) led by Lauren Book to raise awareness about sexual abuse and to urge those who have been abused that "it's okay to tell." Lauren's inspiring new book, It's OK to Tell: A Story of Hope and Recovery, is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com. Walkers are encouraged to bring clothing items to benefit the client's served at the Victim Service Center's Sexual Assault Treatment Center. Needed items this year for women, men and children ages 12 & up: Sports Bras / Flip Flops / Walking Shorts / Women's Panties / Men's Boxers or Briefs / and Socks - The Victim Service Center will be collecting these items all month as part of their annual UnderAWARE Underwear Drive for the entire month of April.

Fort Hays State University is hosting its fifth annual Kansas Women's Leadership Conference next month.

The conference is scheduled for April 1 in Hays and features two keynote speakers. Jackie Stiles, the Kansas native who led the Missouri State University women's basketball team to a Final Four appearance 10 years ago, will give one keynote address.

The Hutchinson News reports that the other keynoter will be Bonnie Dow, chair of the communication studies department at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

The event will also include a march by men from the Fort Hays Interfraternity Council to call attention to the issues of rape, sexual assault and gender violence.

Its time to prevent sexual violence against farm worker and low wage immigrant worker women. The goal of this educational event is to raise consciousness and promote social action about the sexual violence experienced by farm worker and low-wage immigrant worker women. Participants will have the opportunity to create artwork on white bandanas which will be displayed at the Purdue Latino Cultural Center throughout the month of April.
