SAAM 2013 Recap

It’s May! Happy May Day! It’s time for May flowers; it’s time for 70s, sunlit evenings, and the first hints of summer. It’s a new month, but it’s still time to talk about it! Yes, you’ve figured me out. Although the calendar no longer says “April,” I’m still talking about sexual violence prevention because, as far as I’m concerned, SAAM is always in season. For the record, I’m even wearing teal today.

Yes, the national Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaign is officially wrapping up. This April was hugely eventful, and it shows in our SAAM 2013 recap. From the SAAM Day of action, to International Anti-Street Harassment Week, and Denim Day highlights, this recap offers a peak at the many successes of SAAM 2013.

This recap of SAAM on Storify helps us to catalog all of the amazing SAAM participation and sharing that happens on social networks. Including activities like our Tweet about it! Tuesday Twitter chats that happened each Tuesday in April. This was our second round of SAAM chats on Twitter, and this year we were excited to partner with the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape as hosts in utilizing new media and engaging online audiences in discussing sexual violence prevention.

News alerts for the search term “Sexual Assault Awareness Month” confirm that daily SAAM activities and events happened throughout the month and across the country. From community’s that added teal ribbons to police cars, to Take Back the Night, Clothesline Project and Denim Day events, dedicated individuals brought SAAM to life this April.

Catching our breath after a very successful SAAM, it’s also a time for us to acknowledge and thank all those who come together to make this campaign possible. Whether you planned or participated, shouted or shared, your voice is powerful. A movement of voices united in call to action: Prevent sexual violence! Thank you for being a part of the success of SAAM 2013!
