There's a Hole in My Sweater

That’s right…a hole in my brand new, mint green sweater.  As I arrived to work on this Denim Day, I reached for the appropriate awareness button on my cubicle wall (please tell me I am not the only one with a plethora of pins and buttons for every social justice activist occasion).  But what a dilemma…do I put the button on my new sweater, thus risking a hole?  I thought about attaching it to my scarf, but again…the hole.   Then I got mad.  WHY do I even have to make this choice?  I now have a hole in my sweater, thanks to an Italian Supreme Court that made a horrendous decision years ago to overturn a rape conviction because the victim wore tight jeans.  "Hashtag patriarchy" (direct quote from my cubicle mate).

The fact is, we are still battling victim-blaming attitudes and misconceptions about rape 15 years later.  So on goes the button, hole in the sweater and all.

I’m heading to the grocery store soon, where I hope someone asks about my button.  Because I didn’t put a hole in my sweater for nothing.
