Sexual Assault in the LGBTQ Community: What Every Prosecutor Needs to Know
Sexual Assault in the LGBTQ Community: What Every Prosecutor Needs to Know
Sexual orientation and gender identity can impact a sexual assault victim’s legal needs and the legal remedies available to victims; they also can shape both the strategy and the outcome of the case. To successfully prosecute cases involving lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender victims, attorneys must be both culturally competent and aware of how a victim’s sexual orientation and gender identity may play a role in the current case and the ramifications a criminal case may have on future civil actions involving the victim. In this webinar, participants will learn about the legal issues LGBTQ victims face and how to better prosecute cases involving victims from this community.
Laura Mahr is an attorney at the Victim Rights Law Center (VRLC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the nation’s legal response to rape and sexual assault. VRLC provides free legal representation to sexual assault survivors in Massachusetts, and legal technical assistance nationally on sexual assault issues. Ms. Mahr is based in the VRLC’s Portland, Oregon, office, where she provides national legal training and technical assistance on civil legal remedies for sexual assault victims to Office of Violence Against Women programs, including population-specific issues including survivors from the LGBTQ and farmworker communities.
