With guidance from partners and feedback from the field, SAAM 2013 resources focus on educating adults on healthy childhood sexual development. All adults (and young adults) in a community can play a role in child sexual abuse prevention by understanding age-appropriate behaviors, learning skills to support healthy development, and challenging negative messages.
The theme of healthy childhood sexual development grew from conversations and discussions prompted during SAAM’s 2012 healthy sexuality campaign. Adults and advocates shared reflections on the gap in individual knowledge and a cultural silence around sex and sexuality. To protect children, adults often avoid any discussion of sexual development. This silence cannot support healthy development. By starting conversations in families, schools, gathering places and communities, we are able to support children, counter unhealthy messages, and set a standard of openness and accountability among adults. An overview on healthy sexual development, as well as specific resources for parents, community members, and prevention partners, explore this approach.
In addition to resources specific to healthy childhood sexual development, there are campaign materials to support outreach, education and advocacy efforts. Campaign materials include audience-specific tip sheets on sexual violence prevention, social networking tools, a proclamation, a sample Letter to the Editor and a list of event ideas. Be sure to fill us in on your SAAM events by posting them to our online calendar or sharing via Facebook and Twitter.
