Do you feel it? There’s an excitement in the air that can only mean one thing: SAAM 2015!

This week, within the library community, librarians all over the country are celebrating Teen Tech Week. Sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association, it is aimed at teens, their parents, educators, and concerned adults.

Have you ever read a book that made you cry or that you found yourself thinking of years later? Maybe it’s the librarian in me, but a good book takes me to a place that no television show ever could. I find myself dreaming of the characters and fighting the battles they have fought. I am very much an advocate working toward a world free of sexual violence.

In my quest for a blog topic this week, I stumbled upon the fact that January is national tea month. This is fabulous, as I am an avid tea drinker. On this cold and snowy day, I am beginning to find myself going a little stir crazy. With my current cup of green tea, I stare begrudgingly at the snow still coming down. Unless I’m skiing in it, I’m over it.

It’s a safe assumption that most folks are back to work, school or normal life after the holidays. Some may be looking to that next “holiday” or “day off.” For some it might be January 19th. This is the day set aside to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.

It’s the most stressful time of the year, with the kids all bellowing and everyone yelling “We want it all…” Yes, it can be the “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” as the real song states, but it can also be the most stressful as well. The decorations are gorgeous, the music is fabulous, and the treats force us to use that gym membership we’ve ignored all year.

Our country is fortunate to be formed together by various communities. A person might consider families, friends, volunteers, neighborhoods, and many other groups to be their community. In fact, I just spent the weekend with a group of people hanging out in the cold catching the first powder of the season. For me, I get to be part of the ski community.

As I was out shopping recently, it annoyed me to find that many of the stores were already stocked full of Christmas stuff. I still have my fall wreath on my door and am trying to figure out what on earth I might be able to contribute for Thanksgiving dinner. Thanksgiving can mean a number of things to various people.

Ever since I was young, I have been mesmerized by stories. I lived in a world of Clifford the Big Red Dog, Curious George, and The Berenstain Bears. As I got older, the characters changed and the books grew thicker, but I never lost my love for the stories they presented. Along the way, I developed an appreciation for stories of characters overcoming obstacles and surviving.

It seems as though kids today have so much more to deal with than I ever did growing up. Either that or I didn’t see everything that was going on around me. Kids have been bullied for years and in many different ways. Tools and resources are so important in stopping what seems to have become the accepted behavior.
