The NSVRC bloggers are very excited for LGBTQ History Month. Each year, October promises a month of valuing the history of the LGBT movement and the accomplishments of LGBT-identified icons.

Recent news reports teem with commentary on the actions of Boy Scouts of America to cover up years of child sexual abuse allegations. Referred to as the “Perversion Files,” reports of adults sexually abusing scouts spanned decades, from 1970-1991.

On Tuesday afternoon members of our staff stumbled upon the images of Chris Brown’s new tattoo.

I have a dearly beloved, inspiring, mischievous coworker who loves to get me fired up by sending links to articles with subject headings like, “something else for you to blog about.” In case you haven’t met him, watch out for the NSVRC Rural Projects Specialist, because he’ll inevitably brighten your day and make you work harder to end sexual violence all at the same time.

A few weeks ago our staff held a baby shower for a co-worker who is expecting. We’re still waiting for the announcement of the official welcome, but while we wait I thought I’d share a message of hope.

In my former role as a Children’s Advocate at a local rape crisis center, I learned some valuable lessons about what the legal process means to a child victim. Even though each child, each case, and each understanding is uniquely informed by individual experiences, there were a few common features that stuck out to me.

People incarcerated in U.S. Detention Centers face the reality of rape, sexual abuse, and sexual harassment every day. In the wake of the Sandusky trial, I often heard reference to “real justice” being served once he was in prison. Rape in prison is commonly acknowledged as widespread.

I think tech stuff is super cool. I really like learning about it, and talking about it, and brainstorming ways to harness technology for the greater good.
