In today's Memphis Daily News there's an extensive article on the Memphis SANE program and the issues that have been plaguing them and their community. It's worth a read, for sure.

This week, rather than a coordinator Q&A, I wanted to share Andy Goodman's annual Summer Reading List. If you subscribe to his monthly newsletter, free-range thinking, then perhaps you look forward to this issue like I do. The list is never long, but it usually combines titles that explore the human psyche or human behavior and nonprofit business skill-building. I haven't read any of these (yet), but I usually enjoy his recommendations so I'll probably pick up one or two.

One of our readers emailed me asking me what the difference was between a business plan and a strategic plan, which is a great question. Luckily for us, the Alliance for Nonprofit Management has answered that question in a piece they published several years ago, Business Planning for Nonprofits: Why, When — and How It Compares to Strategic Planning (PDF). My love of blogs is no secret. My Google Reader is filled with hundreds of entries every day. Some of them are related to my professional work--many of them are not. Much of what I read I do so for pure pleasure. Cooking and design blogs fall into that category. So imagine my surprise to find that in my Reader today, from one of my favorite design blogs, there's a great post on free software for business owners.

Today's Q&A comes to us from Cindy Jennings, coordinator of the Dayton, OH program. Cindy's been a constant down in the Miami Valley, running one of the older programs in Ohio and she graciously responded to my call for submissions. Thanks, Cindy!

I'd like to give a quick plug for our session at IAFN this year. For those of you attending, we will be doing an all day workshop (PDF) on Saturday, Oct. 24th on program management and leadership development. The workshop will use a mock clinical program case file (given to people in advance) to tackle common issues that develop in the course of running a program.

Last week over at Networking for Good, there was a teleconference on storytelling as an online fundraising technique.

I'm pleased to bring you a new Q&A this week, featuring Stacey Mitchell. Stacey is the immediate past-president of IAFN and a fantastic role model for people looking to push the boundaries of where forensic nursing can go. I like chatting with her because she has a similar perspective on the importance of understanding the business of what we do. Located in the great state of Texas, Stacey's now taken on a considerable challenge in her most recent venture--but I'll let her tell you about it herself:

The Goodman Center, a favorite resource for presentation info, is holding a free webinar July 17th from 9-10 am Pacific, on the results of their national survey on using teleconferences, videoconferences, and webinars instead of in-person meetings and conferences. It should be a great session, since they are focused on what is gained, and lost, when we use these new technologies.
